I am often asked how to navigate tough subjects with our kids. Things like sex, drug exposure, breakups, job loss etc. While I will always say that every situation and child is different, there is a consistent key that will make it much easier to have these discussions. If you can implement it, your success rate and comfortability, will grow considerably. Here it is: Create space for questions and answer them honestly! Begin from the time your child starts asking questions. Children will ask you questions that relate to them. This starts with the names of body parts at a very young age. Answer them honestly and developmentally appropriately. Let the conversation naturally progress without pressure. For example, in my house, these conversations typically happen when I'm making dinner or driving. Educate yourself before you educate them. If you don't have the answers, don't be afraid to admit that you don't. These questions will progress to peer interactions, puberty, eventually sex and beyond. As long as you have created the space to be honest and welcome questions, they will continue to ask them!
